About the Uniting Church
Who we are
The Uniting Church in Australia was formed on June 22, 1977, as a union of three churches: the Congregational Union of Australia, the Methodist Church of Australasia and the Presbyterian Church of Australia.
In uniting, the members of those bodies testified to "that unity which is both Christ's gift and will for the Church" (basis of union, para. 1). Ecumenism remains a vital aspect in all of the church's life and work - in congregations, national commitments to work together with other churches, and relationships and partnerships with churches of various denominations in Asia and the Pacific.
UCA - Basis of Union
Introduction to The Basis of Union, 1992 edition
In 1977 the Congregational, Methodist and Presbyterian Churches united to establish the Uniting Church in Australia. The document upon which this union was established is the Basis of Union of the Uniting Church in Australia, a visionary and inspiring statement. Its grounding in Jesus Christ "the risen crucified One", its commitment to the mission and unity of the whole church, its portrayal of church order and of the ministry of every church member, and its conviction that the living Lord Jesus Christ leads the church on its pilgrim way, make it a rich document which will nourish and guide the Uniting Church for the duration of its life.
