The Exodus Foundation came into being in 1986 when Rev. Bill Crews was ordained as the Uniting Church minister of the Ashfield Parish Mission. Rev. Crews immediately opened the doors of his church to Sydney, and once the doors were open, the need of the community became tragically apparent.
Homeless kids came to sleep on the church pews at night, hungry people came to share in the meals that Rev. Crews provided. From this beginning The Exodus Foundation grew to become one of the city's most important welfare organisations. It is also a high profile part of the Uniting Church in Australia. The Exodus Foundation exists to meet the immediate material, emotional and spiritual needs of disadvantaged and marginalised people. We seek to empower young Australians through education and literacy and so protect them against the prospect of future unemployment and homelessness. Our ministry is primarily to those who are outsiders - the poor and the dispossessed, and those who feel "a church" would not ordinarily welcome them. This ministry is rooted in a worshipping congregation - a congregation that maintains the life of worship, pastoral care and the sacraments. To learn more click here: The Exodus Foundation |
St Matthews has a basket to receive donations of tinned and packet food each week which is delivered to Exodus on a regular basis. Ring pull cans and picture labels are important.
Living is Giving

Living is Giving is the major fundraising program of the Synod of New South Wales and the ACT. It links congregations’ giving and mission planning with the mission of the whole Uniting Church, at home and abroad.
Contributions to Living is Giving help sustain vital ministries like chaplaincy in schools, universities, rural areas, prisons, hospitals and mental health facilities. It also continues to advance the church’s mission work in the areas of Indigenous, cross-cultural, emerging ministries, theological education, tertiary ministry, and advocacy work — areas which have transformed many communities.
St Matthews is committed to supporting this program.

Peakhurst Area School Scripture Board
St Matthews has support the work of the local scripture board for many years. Contributions from local churches allows for the employment of a Scripture Teacher within the local high school.
For more than 30 years, the Peakhurst Area School Scripture Board has provided a christian presence to the lives and community within the schools. It provides an important outreach to students looking for something else - beyond "reading, writing and arithmetic".
